CANNABIS TO TREAT ANXIETY

In times of COVID 19, anxiety disorders have become more frequent in the workplace and households. There is an alarming rising percentage of people suffering from anxiety in North America. In the past, benzodiazepines would have been the default treatment. However, the after-effects of benzodiazepines have proven to be very detrimental to patients. Over the last decade, doctors have mostly stopped prescribing benzodiazepines as a treatment for anxiety. Many individuals and medical sources in Canada and the US are showing strong support for cannabis as a treatment of anxiety and numerous illnesses.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported increasing “trends in the percentage of adults with symptoms of an anxiety disorder or a depressive disorder and those who sought mental health services” Several scenarios including massive crowds, loneliness, or constant worry can lead to a feeling of anxiety.

A few individuals may witness a temporal or a brief period of anxiety, while other individuals can suffer from permanent anxiety disorders. Some of the symptoms linked to anxiety include Insomnia, difficulties breathing, heart palpitations, nausea, shaky hands, panic, and fear.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the two popular compounds within the cannabis plant. THC is in charge of creating the euphoric sensation know as the “high” while CBD has a more calming effect, it is also known as the“non-psychoactive” counterpart to THC.  Knowing the required amount of THC is crucial for anxiety treatment. When THC is consumed in small doses, it can help in treating anxiety. However, the consumption of high doses of THC will instead stimulate anxiety. 

Cannabis to treat other illnesses

The consumption of low amounts of cannabis is beneficial for treating other illnesses such as insomnia.  If you are suffering from anxiety, then it’s advisable not to self-medicate with recreational marijuana. Usually, recreational marijuana contains more THC rather than CBD. THC is considered to be a psychoactive compound, while CBD is not psychoactive. Patients are recommended to select a cannabis strain with a higher concentration in CBD for medical purposes. THC can ignite the amygdala section of the brain responsible for fear, which can lead to anxiety and paranoia.

CBD has been proven to have a lot of health benefits, and it does not have psychoactive compounds like THC; thus it doesn’t make the user “high.” According to numerous studies, CBD can be an effective treatment for anxiety and other mental health illnesses. 

Both CBD and THC offer many health benefits, making cannabis useful for treating anxiety. CBD has been proven to treat numerous ailments including anxiety, depression, vomiting, seizures, psychosis, inflammatory disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, cancer cells, and tumours

Over the last decade, physicians used to prescribe anti-depressants and therapy sessions as a treatment for anxiety. These anti-depressants are not adequate for all patients; and with new scientific data studies coming up,  the use of medical marijuana and cannabis are proving to be an excellent alternative for treating people with these disorders.

The feeling of anxiety in stressful circumstances, like COVID 19 scenarios of loneliness, Zoom exhaustion, or social isolation, can become prevalent and overwhelming. Some people are naturally faced with a sense of anxiety which can start taking over and controlling their lives over time. Anxiety can come in different shapes and forms and it may be hard to determine when anxiety signals turn into a more crippling disorder.
